History

Established in 1977 THE VICTORIAN BALLET SCHOOL has recently moved from Fitzroy to a new brightly painted, well- appointed dance Studio in the vibrant suburb of Northcote. Located at Level 1, 86 SOUTH CRESCENT [Cnr Victoria Road] the school is well serviced by public transport, adjacent to Dennis Railway Station, and in close proximity to local schools, a nursery and food outlets.

With a respect for classical dance traditions, our students are helped to become the best dancers that they can be in a progressive, dynamic and friendly environment, with tuition that is best suited to their individual needs and learning objectives.

Curriculum

Kinder

A special course "Dance Beginnings" is provided for kinder aged children providing them opportunities to develop motor skills, for self-expression and to discover the joy and creativity of dance.

Prep

An introduction to dance course is held for prep students which is the first building blocks for students journey into dance. Listening skills, team work, self confidence and fundamental ballet terms and steps are incorporated in this program in preparation for future dance programs.

Primary

At the primary level, students are trained under the Classical Dance Education Centre Syllabus (C.D.E.C)

This curriculum, based on Laurel Martyn Dance Teaching System (L.M.D.S.), has been developed for especially for the 5 to 9 year old age group.

In this system, the principles and purpose of movement and creative expression are recognised as the core elements of the teaching, which is different to the more rigid and standardised syllabus of training often found in the traditional dance teaching methods.

The syllabus teaches all aspects of dance in general including the Basics and Elements of Dance towards Classical Ballet, Creativity, Musicality, Use of Space, Pattern and Folk dance.

As the primary students progress they are also introduced to the syllabi of the Royal Academy of Dance (London)

Secondary School

For Secondary school students the Ballet class is now the formal/dance training, and is further designed to encourage the student’s creativity and self-expression. At present students commence this course with 3 hrs of Classical Ballet training per week, the number of hours in training increasing throughout the Secondary school.

The R.A.D. Syllabus (Royal Academy of Dance London) is offered from Grades to Vocational Classes. Secondary school students continue further studies and training and study Classical Ballet with the addition of choices in other dance styles that are offered.

Students also have the opportunity to commence the R.A.D Intermediate syllabus from 16 years

Advanced Open Classes

Advanced open classes are also offered at an advanced level who wish to take a non syllabus class to improve technique
